I Won 1st Place in an Essay Contest! (May 2009)

I entered the local Sertoma Society's essay contest. The topic was: "What Freedom Means to Me." I just found out that I won 1st place! My prize is a $200 savings bond and an awards breakfast with my family and teacher. Here is my winning entry!!!

What Freedom Means to Me

Freedom resides in America. It shoots out of our geysers and is our ice cream on a hot day. Freedom is a privilege, though many take it for granted. Americans should imagine being in a place where people are not allowed to defend themselves and cannot speak for what they think is right. So, to me freedom is the right to express yourself.

The greatest freedom is freedom of speech. Have you ever experienced a court ruling, watched TV news, or even read the newspaper? You might have never stopped to think that this wouldn’t be possible without freedom of speech. Even certain parts of history would have never been possible without this freedom. Dr. King’s many preachings, speeches, and rallies influenced generations of people and without this ability, we would not be anywhere close to having a black president.

Freedom is a right and a privilege that shouldn’t be viewed as insignificant. We should consider how citizens of other countries would feel if they were a subject of our nation and were able to experience opportunities our citizens take for granted. To me, freedom is the right to express your opinions; it’s an undeniable human necessity.
