I Won 1st Place in an Essay Contest! (May 2009)

I entered the local Sertoma Society's essay contest. The topic was: "What Freedom Means to Me." I just found out that I won 1st place! My prize is a $200 savings bond and an awards breakfast with my family and teacher. Here is my winning entry!!!

What Freedom Means to Me

Freedom resides in America. It shoots out of our geysers and is our ice cream on a hot day. Freedom is a privilege, though many take it for granted. Americans should imagine being in a place where people are not allowed to defend themselves and cannot speak for what they think is right. So, to me freedom is the right to express yourself.

The greatest freedom is freedom of speech. Have you ever experienced a court ruling, watched TV news, or even read the newspaper? You might have never stopped to think that this wouldn’t be possible without freedom of speech. Even certain parts of history would have never been possible without this freedom. Dr. King’s many preachings, speeches, and rallies influenced generations of people and without this ability, we would not be anywhere close to having a black president.

Freedom is a right and a privilege that shouldn’t be viewed as insignificant. We should consider how citizens of other countries would feel if they were a subject of our nation and were able to experience opportunities our citizens take for granted. To me, freedom is the right to express your opinions; it’s an undeniable human necessity.

I Won 2nd Place in a Poetry Contest (2008)

This poem is from last year (2008). I just decided to post it. I had entered my poem in the Betty Griffin House "A Day Without Violence" contest and won $50. My poem was also put into their calendar! Here it is:

A Day Without Violence
If I had a day without violence,
I know that I would find,
That there is good in every person,
Each and every kind.
Weapons would not exist,
Harsh words never used.
Children would be safe at home,
and none would be abused.

The Lone Wanderer

Black hair
Curls winding
Around her face a denouement
Her reading dissapoints
Her many onlookers think
That she has no personality
Never gives a thought to life outside
The book cover is the only thing
You can ever see
Her face may be pretty
It may not
She doesn't have a beaux
It's not that she's not pretty
It's her personality that's horrible
Give her a chance
Maybe one day someone
Will help her
Will give her a chance yet again
She will rise
She will reach the stars
She will hav chosen her path

It's Time for Lunch

Mama gets some cool new plants
Should I touch it
I'll rip my pants
I'll get a whammy on my behind
Do I dare?
I'd rather not try.
Chicken, chicken!
Feathered flock!
He won't do it!
Pshaw!
Bsquawk!
Fine, I'll try!
I finally yell
They sniff my fear
Keen sense of smell
Goodness knows what I was thinking
Their mouths fall open
I start winking
I turn around, and guess what I see?
Three great big cacti
Leaning over me!
I promised to touch it,
Should I still
I feel like I'm running up a never ending hill
I trudge to cactus
And raise my hand
But like a brightly colored band
My mama, and sisters, and brothers
A big great bunch
Come to tell me
It's time for lunch!
